asked the Secretary of State for Defence what was the strength of the Ulster Defence Regiment at 1st January 1976 and at 1st January 1977.

Mr. Robert C. Brown,

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 14th January 1977; Vol. 923. c. 593], gave the following information:

As at 1st January 1976 the strength of the Ulster Defence Regiment was 7,793, and the strength at 1st January 1977 was 7,616. The figure for the strength of the regiment at 30th November 1976 which I gave to the hon. Member for Antrim, North (Rev. Ian Paisley)—[Vol. 922, c. 367]—has now been revised to 7,613, of whom 1,622 were members of the non-Regular permanent staff.
