HC Deb 07 February 1977 vol 925 cc520-1W
Mr. Higgins

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what action has been taken by his Department to ensure that local authorities are aware of the contents of Inland Revenue leaflet P3(CB) so that they are in a position to reply to queries raised by parents who have received the leaflet regarding adjustment of the parental contribution to take account of reduced child tax allowances.

Mr. Robert Sheldon,

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 3rd February 1977; Vol. 925, c. 311], gave the following information: Local authorities will be aware of the statement made by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Social Services on 23rd September 1976 in which he said that adjustments will be made in the parental contribution scales for student grants to take account of the loss of child tax allowances.

All aspects of the student support system are currently under review by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Education and Science, including adjustment to the parental contribution scale to take account of the proposed reduction of child tax allowances. She hopes to announce the results in the spring.
