HC Deb 03 February 1977 vol 925 c306W
Mr. Newton

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what would be the cost of giving widows under 60 years of age and widowers under 65 years of age a personal tax allowance equal to that of a married man.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

I regret that the information on which to base a precise calculation is not available, but the cost would be somewhere around £40 million.

Mr. Luce

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what would be the estimated loss of revenue if the age allowance paid to widows were to incorporate those between 60 and 65 years of age.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

I regret that the information on which to base a precise calculation is not available, but the estimated cost is somewhere around £15 million.
