58. Mr. Eldon Griffiths

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on the advice he has received from the Association of Chief Police Officers about the effect of local authority expenditure cuts on the ability of the police to deter and detect crime, to protect property and to maintain the public peace.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

I shall be seeing senior members of the Association of Chief Police Officers soon to discuss these matters.

Mr. Jim Callaghan

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is his latest estimate of the number of unoccupied houses in the county districts of the Greater Manchester Metropolitan County belonging to the metropolitan police force.

Dr. Summerskill

On 28th January 1977 the total number of houses held by the Greater Manchester Council for police purposes was 757, of which 62 were unoccupied. 28 of these have been allocated to police officers and are awaiting occupation.
