Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what arrangements there are in her Department to monitor regional news programmes on television and local radio to keep herself, and senior civil servants, informed of regional news and opinion.

Mr. Oakes

The Department has no formal arrangements for monitoring television and radio programmes, but my right hon. Friend is kept informed of regional news and opinion on educational matters through visits to the regions, through the staff of the Department and Her Majesty's Inspectorate and through the services of the regional offices of the Central Office of Information.

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many copies of each of the following newspapers are purchased each day by her Department in order to keep herself, and senior civil servants informed and how many copies of each paper purchased are northern editions: The Guardian, Daily Telegraph, Daily Mail, Daily Express, and Daily Mirror, respectively.

Four copies of The Guardian (Manchester edition) are taken for Her Majesty's Inspectors in the North-Western Division.
