HC Deb 03 February 1977 vol 925 cc302-3W
Mr. Corbett

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what are the arrangements for ensuring that post offices receive adequate supplies of current DHSS booklets and are encouraged to give adequate display to them; why there is such a poor selection of current booklets in Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted and Tring; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Alfred Morris

My Department supplies the Post Office with leaflets covering supplementary benefits, family income supplement, free milk, prescriptions, dental and optical charges for low income families. I am informed that these are displayed wherever possible. Moreover, further supplies of leaflets are always available.

I am also informed that recent inquiries, covering Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted and Tring, indicate that supplies are on display in these areas, especially in Crown offices. I shall be glad to hear from my hon. Friend about any particular case in which he would like me to see if I can be of help.

Mr. Corbett

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services why there are no DHSS booklets on the new mobility allowance and its extension to children aged between five and 10 years available in post offices in Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted and Tring; and what immediate steps he proposes to take to ensure that these booklets are made available in these post offices.

Mr. Alfred Morris

I have sought to publicise the extension of the mobility allowance to 5 to 10 year old children by Press advertisements, in a letter to all Members of Parliament and in many other ways, but will give careful consideration to my hon. Friend's suggestion. Meanwhile, my hon. Friend may like to note that next month there will be a poster in post offices advising people to get the mobility allowance leaflet at social security offices.
