HC Deb 16 December 1977 vol 941 cc554-5W
Mrs. Bain

asked the Minister for the Civil Service if lie will list in the Official Report the number of Civil Service jobs available in each Scottish local government region; how this compares with five years ago; and what are his projections for the next five years.

Mr. Charles R. Morris

The numbers of non-industrial staff in post in Scottish local government regions on 12th December 1977 were:

Borders 252
Central 1,556
Dumfries and Galloway 684
Fife 4,282
Grampian 2,955
Highland 935
Lothian 15,423
Strathclyde 23,161
Tayside 2,158
Island Areas
Orkney 74
Shetland 107
Western Isles 229
Total 51,816

These posts are available either by direct departmental recruitment for the junior grades or by national competition for the more senior grades. Similar information is not available for industrial Civil Service posts, of which there are 19,500 in Scotland. Individual figures for Scottish regions were not available five years ago, but on 1st July 1972 there were 19,500 industrial staff in post in Scotland and 43,200 non-industrial staff.

It is not possible to give projected figures for each Scottish region for the next five years.

Mrs. Bain

asked the Minister for the Civil Service if he will estimate the number of Civil Service jobs available in Scotland as a percentage of the total United Kingdom Civil Service jobs.

Mr. Charles R. Morris

Approximately 10 per cent.
