§ Mr. Pavittasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science further to his reply, Official Report, 29th November, column 175, if she will publish in the Official Report the methods by which the Arts Council is made responsible to the ordinary taxpayer who supports it, and is made responsive to his needs.
§ Mr. OakesThe Arts Council's charter requires it to develop knowledge, understanding and practice of the arts and to increase their accessibility to the public. To perform these functions effectively my right hon. Friend appoints the members, and the Council appoints expert voluntary advisers in the specialist areas. The Secretary General is accountable to Parliament for the Council's expenditure. The Council's annual report, which has just been published, gives a full description of the Council's work, together with detailed accounts of expenditure.
