§ Mr. Corbettasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) whether she will list in the Official Report the financial grants given for kidney research in each of the last five years by, (a) her Department and (b) charitable foundations, listing those establishments which have benefited;
(2) whether she will list in the Official Report the amount of (a) her Department's funds and (b) charitable grants which have been made for research into kidney transplantation in each of the last five years, listing those establishments which have benefited.
§ Mrs. Shirley WilliamsI understand from my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Social Services that the grants given by his Department for kidney research in the financial year 1976–7 amounted to £122,000. The institutions which benefited were:
- London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
- Atomic Weapons Research Establishment, Aldermaston.
- Southmead Hospital, Bristol.
In addition, his Department spent £161,000 on kidney transplantation research. The institutions which benefited were:
- St. Mary's Hospital, Portsmouth.
- Churchill Hospital, Oxford.
In the same financial year, spending by the Medical Research Council on all kidney research, including work on the urinary tract, amounted to £376,000. The Council also supports a wide range of research relevant to the kidney, including basic research in such fields as immunology. When this is taken into account, the Council's expenditure in 89W 1976–7 on all aspects of kidney research is estimated at about £1.875 million including an estimated £264,000 on aspects of kidney research relevant to transplantation.
Information about expenditure by the Department of Health and Social Security and the Medical Research Council is not readily available for the years before 1976–7.
