HC Deb 09 December 1977 vol 940 cc890-1W
Mr. Arnold

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many hours the external services of the BBC broadcast to overseas audiences per week; how this compares with the available figures for the external services of other Common Market countries; and also how this compares with the external broadcasting output of Vatican Radio.

Mr. Luard

The estimated total programme hours per week of external broadcasting by EEC countries are as follows:

BBC 708
France 109
Germany 794
Italy 170
Belgium 88
Denmark 48
Netherlands 393
Luxembourg Nil
Eire Nil

Corresponding figures for Vatican Radio are 159 hours per week. No figures are given for Radio Luxembourg nor for Radio Monte Carlo as these are commercial stations and not external broadcasting services in the normal sense of the term.
