§ Mr. Sillarsasked the Secretary of State for Industry if he will list the Scottish shipyards in public and private ownership, respectively, which are able to construct North Sea oil supply ships; if he will show against each yard the largest ships it is able to build; and what is the number of people employed.
§ Mr. Les HuckfieldAll Scottish shipyards in public ownership are capable of constructing North Sea oil supply ships. The hon. Member should ask British Shipbuilders which would be most suitable for a particular requirement. Which yards in private ownership could do so is a matter for the managements concerned. The maximum size of vessel which can be constructed in particular yards is recorded in the Directory of Shipowners, Shipbuilders and Marine Engineer.
I am not in a position to disclose employment in individual yards and the hon. Member should ask British Shipbuilders and the managements of yards in private ownership for this information.
