HC Deb 08 December 1977 vol 940 cc837-8W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what has been the total of fixed capital formation by the public and private sectors, respectively, in the Scottish economy in the past full year for which details are available; and how this compares at 1973 prices with the position four years ago.

Mr. Gregor MacKenzie

Information is available for the fixed capital formation of central and local government plus all public corporations including nationalised industries. The totals are given below:

IDENTIFIABLE FIXED CAPITAL FORMATION IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR
£ mullion
1972–73 1976–77
Total (excluding steel) 554.8 1,103.6
Total (including steel) N/A 1,209.6

When figures for both years are revalued to constant prices using an aggregrate United Kingdom deflator for the public sector, the resulting estimates suggest that identifiable fixed capital formation excluding steel in the public sector in 1976–77 was rather below the level recorded four years earlier.

Comprehensive official estimates of fixed capital formation by the private sector in Scotland are not available.
