Figures for 1974–75,1975–76 and 1977–78 (estimates) are taken from the Personal Social Services Statistics publications by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy and, for 1974–75 and 1975–76, the Society of County Treasurers. Copies are in the Library of the House. Figures for 1976–77, which are provisional, and for Walsall in 1974–75 are based upon returns submitted to the Department by local authorities.

Figures are of net expenditure by local authorities including loan charges, but excluding administrative costs which cannot be separately identified for these services.

Figures for the past years are at outturn prices, those for 1977–78 are at November 1976 prices.

Comparable information cannot be provided for the period prior to the 1st April 1974, the date the present metropolitan districts and counties were set up under the Local Government Act 1977.
