HC Deb 07 December 1977 vol 940 cc732-6W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Industry if he is able to estimate the amount of cash aid given from Government funds to the timber-using industry in each region of the United Kingdom; what are the largest pulp mill and timber-board projects supported by Government funds in the last five years.

Mr. Cryer

The tables below give details of selective financial assistance offered under Sections 7 and 8 of the Industry Act 1972 to the timber and furniture industries, as defined in Order XVII of the Standard Industrial Classification, and to the pulp, paper and converting industries, included in Order XVIII.

Detailed information on the amount of regional development grants and other forms of assistance to industry—for example, for research—is not available in the form requested, and a disproportionate cost and staff effort would be required to extract and analyse all payments. Details of regional development grants paid, broken down by groups of qualifying activities and by areas, are published each year in the annual report on the Industry Act 1972.

The only offer of assistance for a wood pulp mill project within the last five years has been to St. Anne's Board Mill Company Ltd. at Bristol. Loans amounting to £1.3 million were advanced to Scottish Timber Products Ltd. to help set up a chipboard plant at Cowie, near Stirling, within the same period.
