§ Mr. Maddenasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list the main pieces of equipment used by firemen in fighting fires; and if he will specify the average periods of training necessary to operate each piece of equipment properly and safely.
§ Mr. Merlyn ReesA whole-time recruit to the fire service has to undertake a 12 weeks' training course to enable him at the end of the training to take his place in the brigade alongside experienced firemen. The training covers a wide range of technical and practical subjects, which includes the use of operational equipment and it is not possible to single out individual items as being the most important. Training in prescribed modules, including the use of breathing apparatus, continues during the first four years of operational service to enable-a fireman to obtain the necessary skills to become a qualified fireman and is continuous thereafter. Training in other specialist skills is dependent upon firefighting experience, individual suitability and local needs.
