HC Deb 29 April 1977 vol 930 cc482-3W
Mr. Shersby

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what is the total amount of money made available to the British motor cycle industry under the Industry Act since October 1974.

Mr. Cryer

£4.475 million in the form of loans and £950,000 in the form of grants. A further grant of up to £500,000 is to be made available to Meriden Motor Cycles Ltd. to purchase marketing assets from Norton Villiers Triumph Ltd. when negotiations between the two companies have been concluded.

Mr. Shersby

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what are the prospects for increasing the production of British motor cycles for both the home and overseas markets; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Cryer

This is a matter for the motor cycle manufacturers. I am not aware of any current plans by British manufacturers for a substantial increase in production for either the home or overseas market.

Mr. Shersby

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what discussions he has had with the National Enterprise Board concerning the design and production by the British motor cycle industry of machines comparable with the German BMW machine, which it is reported is to be produced in substantially increased numbers, many of which will be exported to Great Britain.

Mr. Cryer

None.
