§ Mr. Lawrenceasked the Prime Minister why the documents relating to the judicial inquiry into the Profumo affair were not destroyed in the light of the remarks made by Lord Denning in the report itself and on Wednesday 20th April 1977.
§ The Prime MinisterLord Donning stated in his Report (Cmnd. 2152, Paragraph 7) that he assured each witness that what they told him was in strict confidence and he expressed the view some years ago that the records should be destroyed. The documents are, however, covered by the Public Records Act 1958. Their destruction would require the approval of the Lord Chancellor. The approval of the Lord Chancellor has never been sought.
