§ Mr. Carter-Jonesasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what action he will take to alleviate the hardship which will be caused to disabled drivers and retirement pensioners by his increase in fuel tax and the road fund licences.
§ Mr. Robert SheldonI note my hon. Friend's concern. However, the Government are statutorily committed to uprate most social security benefits at least in line with prices. This will protect these benefits from the effect of indirect tax increases on the general price level. Mobility allowance is also to be uprated at the next general uprating of benefits.
