§ Mr. Patrick Jenkinasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what studies he is undertaking into the feasibility of a national system of PAYE tax records using computers; what would be the objective of such a system; how the system would differ in purpose and concept from that in operation at East Kilbride; and whether the system would be linked in any way with the projected child benefit computer centre at Washington.
§ Mr. Robert SheldonThe Board of Inland Revenue is to introduce a pilot computer system in six tax offices in the Midlands and the North-West in order to test the feasibility of introducing a national computer system for PAYE in local tax districts. Such a national system would have the same purpose as that in operation at East Kilbride but would 205W not require the concentration of large numbers of staff and clerical records as at East Kilbride. The pilot system will not be linked with the projected child benefit computer centre as Washington.
