Mr. Adley

asked the Secretary of State for Trade how many departmental surveys, involving questionnaires sent to businesses, industry or members of the public, his Department has currently in hand; how many civil servants are involved therewith; what is their estimated total cost; and if he will list them in the Official Report.

Mr. Les Huckfield

I have been asked to reply also to the Question 49 addressed to the Secretary of State for Trade.

The Departments of Industry and Trade have in hand 31 statistical inquiries, which are listed in the following table. At 1st July 1976, there were 1,200 civil servants involved in collecting and processing the statistics. Their estimated annual total cost, including the cost of support services borne on the votes of other Departments, is £7.7 million.
