§ Mr. Stokesasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what are the reasons for allowing 10,000 Pakistanis to enter Great Britain for permanent settlement in the current year.
§ Dr. SummerskillThere is no fixed quota for the number of citizens of Pakistan accepted for settlement on arrival in any one year. Those accepted now consist almost entirely of dependants of persons already settled in the United Kingdom. Their number increased from 2,688 in the first six months of 1975 to 5,236 in the corresponding period this year, mainly as a result of an acceleration in the rate of issue of entry clearances aimed at reducing the waiting period.
