HC Deb 15 November 1976 vol 919 cc419-20W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list the total number of British citizens who have emigrated in each of the years 1960 to 1976.

Mr. Deakins

Estimates are available since 1964 from the International Passenger Survey and are as follows:

NUMBERS OF UNITED KINGDOM CITIZENS EMIGRATING FROM THE UNITED KINGDOM
Calendar Year (thousands)
1964 202
1965 219
1966 230
1967 238
1968 208
1969 221
1970 214
1971 171
1972 160
1973 176
1974 199
1975 164*
First half
1976 65*
* Provisional

It is known that a proportion of these emigrants, currently estimated to be in the region of 25 per cent. to 30 per cent., subsequently returned to the United Kingdom after living abroad.

In the International Passenger Survey an emigrant is defined as a person who, having lived in the United Kingdom for a year or more, intends to live abroad for at least a year. Emigrants to the Irish Republic are excluded.
