HC Deb 28 May 1976 vol 912 cc416-7W
Mr. Eldon Griffiths

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the number of police officers per head of population in Suffolk; and how this compares with other forces.

Dr. Summerskill

There was one police officer to 552 inhabitants of the police area on 30th April. The national average for all forces in England and Wales was one to 456. Figures for individual forces outside London vary between one to 384 and one to 593. Full details are published in the Annual Report of Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Constabulary.

Mr. Eldon Griffiths

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the present authorised establishment in the Suffolk police force; and how far this has been increased over the past five, 10 and 20 years, respectively.

Dr. Summerskill

1,085. The corresponding figures for 1971, 1966 and 1956 were 998, 957 and 703 respectively, the last two figures being the total for the three forces which were not then but are now combined in the present force.

Mr. Eldon Griffiths

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many complaints made by members of the public against the Suffolk police have been substantiated.

Dr. Summerskill

The number of substantiated complaints against members of the Suffolk Constabulary in each of the three years 1973–1975 was 21, 15 and 42 respectively.
