HC Deb 26 May 1976 vol 912 cc258-9W
Mrs. Hart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many jobs have been created in industrial estates, excluding those of new towns, by non-Scottish based companies since 1947.

Mr. Millan

The number of manufacturing jobs currently provided by companies which have come to Scotland since 1947 and are occupying Government-built factories, excluding those in new towns. is estimated to be about 45,000.

Mrs. Hart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many jobs have been created in all the Scottish new towns by non-Scottish based companies.

Mr. Millan

The number of manufacturing jobs currently provided by non-Scottish based companies which have set up in the new towns is estimated to be about 19,000.

Mrs. Hart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many jobs in the building industry he estimates to be affected in the next two years by his abandonment of Stonehouse New Town.

Mr. Millan

No firm estimate is possible, both because the pace of development at Stonehouse over the next two years, in the light of current constraints on public expenditure, had not been determined and because account must also be taken of the implications of my decision for the rate of urban rehabilitation.

Mrs. Hart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if the 2,000 jobs which were likely to come to Stonehouse New Town had its development proceeded will now come to Scotland.

Mr. Millan

The figure quoted by my right hon. Friend is perhaps less firmly based than she suggests and must include many jobs originating in Scotland; as I announced on 12th May the Scottish Development Agency has been invited to take over the main industrial site at Canderside.
