HC Deb 12 May 1976 vol 911 cc177-8W
Rear-Admiral Morgan-Giles

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will ask the schools working party on curricular matters to examine the provision of training in first aid in secondary schools.

Miss Margaret Jackson

There is no single working party on school curriculum matters. The Schools Council, which keeps the school curriculum under review and makes available advice on curricular matters, has a number of committees concerned with various aspects of the curriculum. The council itself decides from time to time which aspects are to be studied.

Advice on the teaching of first aid in secondary schools is, however, given in the Department's "Handbook of Health Education" The handbook stresses that there are limits beyond which elementary first aid cannot go.
