Mr. Jim Lester

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what was the annual number of stores issued in 1975 from Central Ordnance Depot Chilwell, Central Ordnance Depot Donnington and Central Ordnance Depot Bicester, respectively.

Mr. Robert C. Brown

The number of stores issues made from each of the central ordnance depots in 1974–75, the latest financial year for which complete statistics are available, were as follows:

Chilwell 1,067,220
Donnington 2,537,664
Bicester 901,901

Mr. Jim Lester

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is the cost per issue, respectively, from Central Ordnance Depot Chilwell, Central Ordnance Depot Donnington and Central Ordnance Depot Bicester.

expected to be recruited during the current year.

Mr. William Rodgers

The following tables shows the recruitment of apprentices at Woolwich Arsenal. The intake this year is expected to be broadly similar to that of 1975.

Mr. Robert C. Brown

The administrative cost per issue for the central ordnance depots in 1974–75, the latest financial year for which complete statistics are available, was as follows:

Chilwell £3.09
Donnington £1.13
Bicester £4.88

These figures are not a measure of the cost effectiveness of the depots concerned, as differences in type, weight, quantity held, method of handling and so on of the stores involved make a simple comparison of cost per issue meaningless.
