asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will introduce legislation to facilitate the merging of small building societies.

Mr. Denzil Davies

I am not convinced of the need for special powers for this purpose. The Chief Registrar of Friendly Societies already encourages mergers between societies where this would lead to greater efficiency. Thirty-two societies with assets of less than £1 million have merged with larger societies within the last two years.
