HC Deb 03 May 1976 vol 910 c259W
Mr. Michael Latham

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what would be the current real value of the £ sterling taking (a) November 1956 and (b) June 1957 as the base period, and its value equalling £1 in each of those months.

Mr. Denzil Davies

Taking the internal purchasing power of the pound to be 100p in 1956 and in 1957, its value in March 1976, the latest date available, is estimated to be 30½p and 31½p respectively. The basis for these estimates is that given in the leaflet "The Internal Purchasing Power of the Pound" obtainable from the Press and Information Service of the Central Statistical Office.
