HL Deb 16 March 1976 vol 369 c211WA
Lord O'HAGAN

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How and to what extent the absorption of airborne lead results in dangerous lead levels in the human body.

Lord WELLS-PESTELL

I am advised that the effect on the human body of lead derived from air cannot be distinguished from the effects of lead derived from other sources. There is no generally accepted evidence that, other than in isolated cases, lead levels in the human body in this country are a danger to health, but the Government consider that it is right, in view of the lack of certainty in this area of knowledge, to maintain a close watch on the situation and to seek where possible reduction in lead levels. It is for this reason that the Government have announced their further programme for the restriction of lead emitted from motor vehicles.
