HC Deb 09 March 1976 vol 907 cc156-7W
Mr. Ronald Atkins

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) what contribution the use of shellgrip and spraygrip on road junctions has made to reduction of accidents; and how the cost of the application compares with the money saved by fewer accidents;

(2) how many highway authorities are using shellgrip and spraygrip; and if he recommends greater use.

Mr. Marks

In certain places treatment with shellgrip or spraygrip can reduce the number of personal injury accidents on average by about one quarter; the cost of treatment can be offset by the accident saving in the first year. No information is available about the number of local authorities which have used shellgrip or spraygrip on their own roads; about 30 authorities have carried out such treatment on trunk roads as our agents.
