§ Mr. Molloyasked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will take steps to make compulsory the issuing of receipts for rent or rent books by landlords, in view of the difficulties facing tenants of landlords who do not at present do this; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. FreesonUnder the Landlord and Tenant Act 1962 a rent book must be provided by the landlord where there is a tenancy under which rent is payable weekly. I know the hon. Member has a case in which a tenant whose rent was payable fortnightly was unable to obtain receipts for rental payments, but I have seen no other evidence that the current law is causing difficulties. I am of course prepared to consider this matter further if more evidence is forthcoming.
