HC Deb 02 March 1976 vol 906 cc515-6W
22. Mr. Rees-Davies

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science, having regard to the low recruitment of mathematics and science teachers, if he will bring forward proposals to secure an immediate increase in recruitment, including in particular, the provision of higher differential salaries designed to attain such an increase.

Mr. Mulley

My Advisory Committee on the Supply and Training of Teachers is considering the recruitment of mature graduates from industry and the possibility of re-training existing teachers. The arrangements for teachers' salaries fall to be considered by the Burnham Committee; it is already open to local education authorities to recruit on salaries above the basic scale.
