HL Deb 15 June 1976 vol 371 cc1249-50WA

asked Her Majesty's Government:

With regard to the 1.8 billion dollars aid reported as having been recently advanced by World Bank Agencies to India, what portion of it falls on the United Kingdom and what proportion of this, if any, is " tied aid for Britain; and with regard to the reported postponement of maturities of 200 million dollars indebtedness, what proportion is borne by Britain.

My Lords, of the 1.8 billion dollars pledged to India by members of the India Consortium at the meeting in May the United Kingdom contribution is £112.1 million. The United Kingdom share is about 11 per cent. at present exchange rates. The overall pledge includes debt relief totalling 158 million dollars which most of the Consortium members agreed to provide. The United Kingdom share of debt relief at present exchange rates is about 14 per cent. and amounts to £.12.1 million in 1976/77. With the exception of the debt relief which is on an untied basis from all contributors, all of the United Kingdom pledge is tied to United Kingdom goods and services.

House adjourned at six minutes before ten o'clock.
