HC Deb 26 July 1976 vol 916 c25W
Rev. Ian Paisley

asked the Secretary State for Defence if he will make a statement on the planting of a bomb which killed a soldier in the sleeping quarters of an army barracks in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Robert C. Brown

Just before 10.30 p.m. on Wednesday 21st July a devise exploded in a bedroom on the first floor of the warrant officers' and sergeants' mess at Ebrington Barracks, Londonderry, killing Sergeant David Evans of the 25th Field Squadron, Royal Engineers. The Provisional IRA in Londonderry has apparently claimed that it was responsible. An investigation is in hand and no effort will be spared in seeking out those who carried out this cowardly attack and bringing them to justice. I extend my deepest sympathy to the widow, relatives and friends of Sergeant Evans.
