HC Deb 26 July 1976 vol 916 cc54-5W
Mr. Knox

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he is satisfied with the use of fog warning lights on motorways; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Gilbert

The operation of warning lights is the responsibility of the chief officer of police in the area concerned. I am satisfied that the system makes an important contribution to safety, though problems arise because the lights have to be switched on and off individually. Computer-operated matrix signals are progressively replacing earlier equipment and these enable warnings to be switched on more quickly and to be more informative.
