§ Mr. Corbettasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many cases of alleged fraud there have been in each of the last three years over the non-payment of income tax; how many cases have been settled by negotiation; how many cases have been taken to court and with what result; and what is the latest estimate of the annual total of unpaid income tax.
§ Mr. Robert SheldonI refer my hon. Friend to the reply I gave to my hon. Friend the Member for Chorley (Mr. Rodgers) on 10th May. — [Vol. 911, c.54.] Particulars of cases of under-assessment are given in Table 17 of the 118th Report of the Commissioners of Her Majesty's Inland Revenue (Cmnd. 6302). As regards the last part of the Question, I take it that my hon. Friend has in mind the income tax lost annually through evasion. No estimate of this can be made.
