§ Miss Margaret JacksonThe Department collects school statistics only as at January of each year, the latest such information available being for 1975. Due to the variations in the rate of secondary school reorganisation it is not possible to derive a reasonable estimate of grammar school entry for the coming autumn. However in January 1975, when 9 per cent. of the maintained secondary school population of England and Wales were in grammar schools, it is estimated that some 50,000 children were in their first year at a maintained grammar school.
