asked the Prime Minister if he will define the responsibilities of the Secretary of State for Industry.

The Prime Minister

The Secretary of State for Industry is responsible for general industrial policy, including the Government's industrial strategy, policy towards planning agreements, and financial assistance to industry, though some of his responsibilities in the latter field relate only to England. He sponsors the National Enterprise Board, the British Steel Corporation, the Post Office Corporation, Cable and Wireless Ltd. and the aircraft and shipbuilding, as well as the general manufacturing industries. The Secretary of State is also responsibile for industrial research and development, including civil aerospace research and the operation of the Government's industrial research establishments, and for the Business Statistics Office.
