§ Lord BALERNOasked Her Majesty's Government:
Whether they will provide information concerning the expenditure in Scotland on research and development in fish farming.
§ The MINISTER of STATE, SCOTTISH OFFICE (Lord Kirkhill): Expenditure on fish farming research and development carried out by Department of Agriculture and Fisheries' scientists in Scotland amounted to some £215,000 in 1975/76, of which some £65,000 was for disease work. Most of this work was concerned with salmonid fish. In the same year, Government grant-aid covered one half of the White Fish Authority's expenditure of around £250,000 on fish and shell-fish farming, most of which was devoted to research and development into the farming of marine flat fish in Scotland.
