asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the total accumulated debt of local authorities in England and Wales at the latest available date.

In the latest survey by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy the total debt administered by local authorities in England and Wales at 31st March 1975 is estimated at just over £22,000 million.
