Notes:

(1)In Italy, Sweden, Japan and USA, unemployment is measured by labour force sample survey statistics. Denmark uses statistics of trade union schemes. The data for Ireland are based on unemployment insurance statistics. Other countries use employment office statistics of registered unemployed.

(2)The numbers unemployed in November 1975 and the figures which have been used to calculate the percentage changes in the numbers unemployed are, with the exception of Sweden, adjusted to take account of seasonal variations.

(3)The latest data for Ireland and Japan relate to October 1975 and the percentage changes have been measured over one month, three months and 12 months to that date. A similar calculation has been made for Italy where figures are only published quarterly.

(4)The rate for Austria relates to October 1975. The remaining data for Austria relate to November 1975.

(5)The rate for France, expressed as a percentage of the civilian labour force, has been estimated by the Department of Employment.
