HC Deb 26 January 1976 vol 904 cc98-9W
Mr. Michael McGuire

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what estimate he has made of the number of jobs saved as a result of stocking by textile manufacturers; and if he will make a statement about the Government's intentions to assist with this stocking.

Mr. Carmichael

It is not possible to estimate the number of jobs saved by stockbuilding, which is only one of many factors affecting employment in the textile industry. As my hon. Friend the Under-Secretary of State for Trade said in the House on 6th August 1975, the Government decided, after extensive consultation with the industry, that a stock-building scheme would not be desirable.
