HC Deb 26 January 1976 vol 904 cc85-6W
Mr. David Price

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the latest figure for all unemployed, excluding school leavers and students, seasonally-adjusted, in the Southampton travel-to-work area, including Eastleigh; and how this compares with the similar figure for each of the previous three years.

Mr. John Fraser

Seasonally-adjusted figures are not available for travel-to-work areas. The table below shows the unadjusted numbers of unemployed persons, excluding school leavers and adult students, in the Southampton travel-to-work area, which includes Eastleigh.

January 1976 8,595*
† February 1975 5,348
January 1974 3,563
January 1973 4,718

* Provisional.

† Owing to industrial action at local offices of the Employment Service Agency, figures for January 1975 were not collected.

Mr. David Price

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the latest figure for unemployed school leavers in the Southampton travel-to-work area, including Eastleigh; and how this compares with the similar figure for each of the previous three years.

Mr. John Fraser

Following is the information available:

January 1976 178*
February 1975 25
January 1974 8
January 1973 18

* Provisional.

Owing to industrial action at local offices of the Employment Service Agency, figures for January 1975 were not collected.

Mr. David Price

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the latest figure for the number of registered vacancies for jobs in the Southampton travel-to-work area, including Eastleigh; and how this compares with the similar figure for each of the previous three years.

Mr. John Fraser

Following is the information available:

SOUTHAMPTON TRAVEL-TO-WORK AREA
Vacancies held by Employment Offices Vacancies held by Careers Offices
January 1976 701* 82*
March 1975† 832 267
January 1974 2,427 634
January 1973 1,862 303

* Provisional.

† Owing to industrial action by local offices of the Employment Service Agency, figures for January and February 1975 are not available. Vacancy figures relate only to vacancies notified to employment offices and careers offices and are not a measure of total vacancies.

Because of possible duplication, the vacancy figures for employment offices and careers offices should not be added together.

Mr. David Price

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many jobs have been preserved or created in the Southampton travel-to-work area, including Eastleigh, under the temporary employment subsidy scheme.

Mr. John Fraser

As at 23rd January, 346 jobs were being preserved in this area. The Temporary Employment Subsidy Scheme is not designed to create jobs.
