HC Deb 16 January 1976 vol 903 c276W
Mr. Madden

asked the Minister for Overseas Development how many staff are employed by his Department outside the United Kingdom and at what total cost on an annual basis.

Mr. Prentice

Some 52 of the permanent staff of my Department, engaged in aid administration, are based overseas, at an annual cost of about £757,000. There are also about 57 permanent staff of the scientific and technical units of the Department serving abroad on specific assignments, at an annual cost to the aid programme of some £926,940.

In addition my Department sends technical assistance experts to work abroad under the aid programme. They are not permanent members of ODM, and their numbers vary according to the demand from overseas countries. At present the number is about 1,000 and the cost £11 million.
