§ Mr. George Rodgersasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food 43W if he will publish in the Official Report figures showing the proportions of the annual fish catch by British trawlers that are sold for human consumption, purchased for the purpose of producing pet food and purchased for the purpose of the manufacture of soil fertilisers, according to the latest available statistics.
§ Mr. BishopOf the total British fish landings of 954.5 thousand tons in 1974, 807.5 thousand tons—84.6 per cent.—went for human consumption and 5.4 thousand tons—0.6 per cent.—went for the production of pet food. The bulk of the remainder was processed into fishmeal which, although intended primarily for animal feed, can be used as fertiliser. No statistics are available but quantities so used are thought to be very small.
