asked the Prime Minister if he will make a statement on the Government's intentions concerning direct elections to the European Assembly.

I must ask my hon. Friend to wait for the paper which the Government propose to publish as a basis for parliamentary debate. In the meantime I have nothing to add to what my right hon. Friend the Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary and I have already told the House.
