asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people in the East Midlands were employed in the knitwear and hosiery industry in June 1973; how many there are at the latest date; and what is the current level of unemployment and short-time working in this industry.

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 26th January 1976; Vol. 904, c. 86–7], gave the following information:

On 8th January 1976, 2,478 people who last worked in the knitwear and hosiery industry—Minimum List Heading 417 of the Standard Industrial Classification—were unemployed in the East Midlands region.
