HC Deb 04 February 1976 vol 904 cc624-5W
Mr. Sproat

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many foreign students are studying in Scotland in higher education establishments for which he has responsibility; what is the estimated annual cost to the British taxpayer of these foreign students' studies; and what percentage of the total number of students this is.

Mr. William Ross

In 1974–75, 672 overseas students were studying on full-time advanced level courses at central institutions, colleges of education and education authority further education colleges; the net cost to the taxpayer is estimated to have been £620,000; overseas students represented 2.5 per cent. of the total number of full-time advanced level students.
