HC Deb 02 February 1976 vol 904 cc461-9W
Mr. Mike Noble

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what are his forecasts for the British manufacturers, share of the United Kingdom and European textile markets in 1977 as a result of the agreements concluded under the Multifibre Arrangements and the burden-sharing agreement.

Mr. Deakins

, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 22nd January 1976; Vol 903, c. 576], gave the following information:

Market shares will be determined by many factors, including the level of demand, as well as by the MFA agreements and the burden-sharing formula. I am not, therefore, prepared to hazard forecasts for 1977, but the MFA agreements should help our manufacturers to maintain their market share, particularly in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Mike Noble

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what the rate of growth of textile imports from Hong Kong will be, by category, for each member State of the EEC, in 1975, 1976 and 1977 as a result of the recently concluded agreement on trade in textiles between the EEC and Hong Kong.

Mr. Deakins,

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 22nd January 1976; Vol 903, c. 576], gave the following information:

Following is the information, in percentages, in the table below.

This table is based on data compiled by the European Commission. Percentages in the columns for 1976 and 1977 represent in all cases changes from the previous years quota levels. Percentages in the column for 1975 represent, in the case of the United Kingdom, changes from 1974 quota levels, where there was a quota in 1974, or from actual trade in 1974, where trade in 1974 was unrestricted. In the case of the other EEC member States, percentages in the column for 1975 represent changes from actual levels of trade in 1974. Items marked with an askerisk in the column for Ireland in 1975 cannot be calculated because no imports into Ireland were recorded in 1974. No allowance has been made for reductions in 1976 growth rates and corresponding increases in 1977 arising from reductions in the 1976 quotas for certain categories agreed in consultations on Hong Kong's quota usage in 1975. No allowance has been made for flexibility in the use of quotas.
