HC Deb 21 December 1976 vol 923 c137W
Mr. Charles Irving

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many open prisons have been closed; how many prisoners they accommodated; and where the open prisons that were closed are situated.

Mr. John

Three open prisons for men—at Bela River, Cumbria, with 250 places, Haldon Camp, Devon, with 196 places, and Drake Hall, Staffordshire, with 380 places—were closed in December 1974. Drake Hall was partially reopened in October 1975 to provide about 100 places for women.
